Giant's Causeway

The Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site,

is on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland.

 

The scientific data states that a volcanic eruption created this area of over 40,000 basalt columns millions of years ago. Most of them are hexagonal, but some have four, five, seven or eight sides.

Legend holds that these columns were built by an Irish Giant, named Fionn, who was to fight off a Scottish giant, named  Benandonner.  One version of the story has Fionn disguised as a "baby" by his wife for the giant's first meeting. This instills fright into the larger Benandonner, who fears the baby's father must truly be a formidable and victorious force. Benandonner then flees back to Scotland across the causeway, destroying much of it on his way.   There are similar basalt columns at Fingal's Cave on the Scottish isle of Staffa.
