When we first moved to England, we really wanted to live on base. Lakenheath AFB had a lot of brand new housing and it looked to be the most attractive in all the land and it seemed like that is where all the happy people we knew lived. We had never lived on base before, and with all the girls going to school eventually, we wanted that convenience. Plus, it would most economical for various reasons: free utilities, reduced transportation costs, and England has 220 power and we didn't want to have to use transformers and get new electronics. We were very sad to learn there was no house on base for us, so we began a weeklong search for an acceptable dwelling off-base. We started actively looking on a Monday and each day our choices seemed worse than the day before. Finally on Friday, we found three good choices. The first one was newer and had heated floors and huge walk-in closets, but it was a longer commute and all the girls were carsick from the drive. When we drove down the lane to Croft House, we fell in love before we even walked in the door. Once inside, the girls went nuts...running room to room and staking claim. Even though we didn't get what we initially wanted, it all worked out for the best and we were blessed to spend four happy years at Croft House in Feltwell.
